I think it does sound like peter up to his tricks again. Nothing on Bruce's home page or any of his writings sound like what you found.
Re brakes, I am doing the 11,000 mile service and inspected mine. I have a kelvar set in a box for when I need them but the orginals look like they will go another 3000 miles. Will adjust the valves tomorrow when it has cooled. sure hope we get a better air filter before long. I found some light grit in the blowby oil film in the carb side of the filter, looked carefully at the selaing surface an it appears all four side were making good contact. It is either going through the filter or coming back the crankcase vent. I'll do some more investigating tomorrow. Max
